To Attain Market Supremacy

Big tech companies are competing for a share of the metaverse device market.

Samsung Electronics, Apple, Meta and Microsoft are competing for a share of the burgeoning metaverse device market, which is expected to grow 80 percent annually.

Samsung Electronics will introduce an augmented reality (AR) device that will be loaded with hologram technology. The company has been preparing to commercialize hologram technology for a long time.

Samsung's AR device will run on the company's own Exynos application processor (AP) and the Google Android OS. The company is developing technologies in close cooperation with DigiLens, a U.S. company specializing in AR and Extended Reality (XR). Samsung Electronics has completed the development of a prototype and is reportedly adjusting the release time. The Korean tech giant is also developing an AR headset by partnering with Microsoft. A task force (TF) was formed for this project. Samsung is seeking to enter the ㅡmetaverse device market through two tracks -- an AR device with its own brand and the other one to be launched in collaboration with Microsoft.

Apple is known to have recently completed a test on a VR headset for launch by the end of 2022. The Apple VR device is loaded with a micro organic light emitting diode (OLED) display. Apple has completed the development of the OLED display for the VR device with Taiwan’s TSMC. Micro OLED displays do not require color filters by depositing OLEDs directly on chip wafers. It is smaller, slimmer and more power efficient. Apple decided to use its own system on chip M1 as an application processor for the VR headset, which will be powered by the iOS operating system.

Meta (formerly known as Facebook) is developing a new metaverse hardware product loaded with a micro OLED display, a Qualcomm AP, and the Google Android OS. Microsoft is also developing smart glasses to be powered by a Qualcomm AP and hologram technology.
