With the arrival of ultra high definition (UHD) TV, the size of TV screens has grown. However, an interesting outlook came out that the size of the existing high definition (HD) TV screens will decrease in the future.

According to a report released by DisplaySearch, a leading global market research and consulting firm, on Jan. 25, the average size of TVs is expected to keep increasing from 38.6 inches in 2014 to 39.2 inches in 2015, to 40.3 inches in 2016, and to 40.9 inches in 2017.

The number of pixels in a UHD TV (3480×2160) is four times that of Full HD TVs (1920×1080). So, you can enjoy sharper and more detailed images, even though the size of the TVs becomes larger. Accordingly, UHD TVs are released with an average size of 50 inches.

The average size of UHD TVs is likely to expand even more from the level of 50 inches. According to DisplaySearch, the average size of UHD TVs will increase to 51.2 inches this year from 50.9 inches last year. Then, it will increase further to 52 inches in 2016 and to 52.2 inches in 2017.

The interesting part is that the average size of full HD TVs or HD TVs (1920×720) will decrease. The average size of full HD TVs is likely to decrease from 43.6 inches in 2014 to 43.7 inches in 2015, and to 42 inches in 2017. Also, the average size of HD TVs will decrease from 30.7 inches to 30.5 inches during the same period.

The reason the sizes of full HD TV screens are decreasing while the sizes of TVs are generally increasing is that UHD TVs hold a dominant position in the large high-end TV market.

The size of high-end UHD TVs is also increasing. Last year, the most popular sizes for UHD TVs were 55 and 65 inches. However, its products with a size of 70 to 80 inches will be additionally launched this year. Samsung Electronics will reveal its new product, the SUHD TV, in sizes of 65 inches, 78 inches, and 88 inches. LG Electronics will also launch the Ultra OLED TV with sizes of 55 inches, 65 inches, and 77 inches.
