Renault and Geely Target Korean Market

Renault Samsung Motors will produce eco-friendly cars jointly developed by Renault Group of France and Geely Holding Group of China.

Renault Samsung Motors will produce and sell eco-friendly cars jointly developed by Renault Group of France and Geely Holding Group of China from 2024.

Renault Group and Geely Holding Group agreed on a mutual cooperation plan on Jan. 21 to launch a jointly developed model in the Korean market. The two sides are planning to sell the model in the global market in the future.

Renault Samsung researchers will develop a new model based on the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform of Volvo, which is under the control of the Chinese automotive group. Geely will provide technical support through its R&D center in Sweden, while Renault Group will design the model.

The CMA platform is a global mid-size unibody automobile platform, jointly developed by Volvo and Geely. It can be applied to various types of vehicles such as internal combustion engine-powered models, hybrids, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and pure electric vehicles. Various brands including Volvo, Geely Auto and Lynk & Co under Geely Holding are introducing models developed on the platform. The Volvo XC40 was also developed based on this platform.

The joint venture model will be manufactured at Renault Samsung’s Busan plant beginning from 2024. Initially, hybrid and internal combustion engine models will be developed and sold under the Renault Samsung brand.
