Using Patents Acquired from LG Innotek
Samsung Electronics has been facing a lawsuit from a European patent troll. Less than two months have passed since being sued by a former Samsung patent executive, Korea’s largest company has become a target of a parent suit by a patent troll once again.
Scramoge Technology, a non-practicing entity (NPE) based in Dublin, filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Samsung Electronics with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas on Jan. 10.
Scramoge Technology claimed that Samsung Electronics launched new products using its wireless charging technology without permission.
The NPE purchased 123 patents were purchased related to wireless charging from LG Innotek a year ago. The Irish patent troll reportedly purchased LG Innotek’s patents at a bargain price of 5 billion won.
Using the patents acquired from LG Innotek, Scramoge Technology filed lawsuits against Samsung Electronics twice in April and August 2021. It included Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3 as patent infringement items in the lawsuit.
Scramoge Technology said that Samsung violated their seven wireless charging patents, including short-range communication antenna solutions. It also filed a damage claim, asserting that Samsung Electronics caused damage to it by selling patented products in the United States.
Industry observers say that Samsung will have an uphill legal battle with Scramoge Technology as the NPE's parent company is Atlantic IP Services, a notorious patent troll group. It has Solas OLED and Neodron as subsidiaries, which had filed patent suits against Korean companies such as Samsung Electronics, Samsung Display, LG Electronics and LG Display.
