Google Arrogance

It has been said that Google’s monopolistic tyranny in the domestic mobile application market is going too far. According to application developers, their apps are removed from Google Play without any notice, and re-registration takes too much time.

The situation is even harsher for smaller firms and individual developers, because Google rarely communicates with app developers. This is in contrast to domestic app stores like SK Planet’s T Store and Naver’s App Store, which run their own developer centers.

Another source of criticism is the pre-loading of the Google Play on Android smartphones to block the approach of other application market services. Google Play charges a fee of as much as 30 percent to the app providers’ sales generated on the platform.

According to ruling Saenuri Party lawmaker Shin Dong-woo, the Google Play recorded 1.3 trillion won (US$1.19 billion) in sales in 2013 and Korea ranked fifth in terms of the number of registered applications. Those in the industry are criticizing that Google is taking huge fees from Korea but providing little convenience for app developers in the country.
