To Commercialize Satellite-based 5G Services

A South Korean and EU research team has developed the world’s first 5G-satellite communication network.

A South Korean and European Union (EU) research team has developed and demonstrated the world’s first 5G-satellite communication network. The team consists of the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, KT Sat, the Korea Automotive Technology Institute, SK Telecom, Snet ICT, CEA-Leti of France, the Fraunhofer Institute of Germany, and the Consortium for Research in Automation and Telecommunication.

The team has conducted research on 5G-satellite interworking for three years so that switching between 5G and satellite-based services can be seamless and stable communications can be guaranteed even when there is no base station or a shortage of base stations.

The team successfully demonstrated 8K video streaming, a VR game and a real-time 360-degree webcam service by intercontinental connection with a car equipped with 5G and satellite communication terminals and a traffic controller. The team will utilize the outcome of the research and demonstration in developing satellite-based and more advanced communication systems and 5G services.

“Once the interworking is commercialized, much more stable communication services can be provided in ocean areas, remote areas, disaster situations, and so on,” the team said.
