To Respond to Growing Demand from Automakers

LG Energy Solution is moving to produce prismatic batteries for electric vehicles.

LG Energy Solution is considering producing prismatic batteries for electric vehicles. If the company actually produces them, it will be the first Korean battery company to produce all three types of batteries -- cylindrical, pouch and prismatic.

“We already have the technology to produce prismatic batteries as we have the experience of mass-producing small prismatic batteries,” said LG Energy Solution on Jan. 5. “We are considering developing prismatic batteries for automobiles to meet various customer needs.”

In the case of Samsung SDI, the mainstay products are prismatic and cylindrical batteries. SK On has been supplying mainly pouch-type batteries, but it is reportedly considering producing prismatic batteries.

Volkswagen announced in March that it will increase the proportion of prismatic batteries to 80 percent by 2030. LG Energy Solution appears to be responding to the increased use of prismatic batteries by global automakers such as Volkswagen.

Currently, China’s CATL has the highest share in the prismatic battery market. Competition in the prismatic battery market is expected to heat up with the entry of LG Energy Solution and SK On.
