Dominant in LTE Patents

LG Electronics announced on Jan. 12 that it ranked first in the world for four consecutive years from 2012 in the competition of standard essential patents related to the Long Term Evolution (LTE) and LTE-A technologies.

According to LG Electronics, the company registered the largest number of patents. The result came out from an analysis that U.S. patent analyzing institute TechIPM made targeting the standard essential patents of LTE and LTE-A related to accumulated terminals and base stations registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) as of last December.

TechIPM reported rankings once a year starting from 2012. Last year, however, it reported the rankings two times, in January and August. LG Electronics ranked first in both investigations.

In the August presentation of TechIPM, LG Electronics ranked first with a 29 percent share of the total standard essential patents, followed by Samsung Electronics (16 percent), Qualcomm (8 percent), Inter Digital (7 percent), Google/Motorola (7 percent), and Nokia (7 percent).

This year, only the market share rankings were made public, but not specific market share.
