Samsung Electronics saw it share of the global smartphone application processor (AP) market halved in the third quarter of 2020.

Samsung Electronics’ share of the global smartphone application processor (AP) market was halved in the third quarter of 2021 from a year ago. Taiwan’s MediaTek saw its market share cross the 40 percent mark.

Samsung Electronics logged a 5 percent market share in the smartphone AP market in the third quarter of 2021, said Counterpoint Research, a market research company, on Dec. 17. The Korean smartphone giant ranked fifth overall with its market share dropping 5 percentage points from 10 percent in the previous year.

Counterpoint Research said MediaTek and Qualcomm increased their market shares across Samsung’s smartphone portfolio, from low-end models to flagship phones.

MediaTek maintained its No. 1 position, with its market share gaining 7 percentage points from 33 percent a year earlier. Qualcomm's share fell 1 percentage point from 28 percent in the third quarter of 2020. Apple ranked third with its market share climbing 3 percentage points from 2020 to 15 percent. Counterpoint Research predicted that Apple’s market share will rise further in the fourth quarter.

China’s UNISOC, which ranked sixth in 2020, came in fourth, with its market share rising from 4 percent to 10 percent thanks to the expansion of Chinese smartphone manufacturers such as Honor and RealMe.
