Pilot Projects to Be Initiated in 2022

LNG power generation demonstration equipment under development at the KEPCO Research Institute

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on Dec. 7 that a comprehensive roadmap will be prepared and pilot demonstration projects will be initiated next year with regard to hydrogen- and ammonia-based power generation.

In this regard, the KEPCO Research Institute is planning to install hydrogen and ammonia supply equipment and combustion testers by the first half of next year. At the same time, it is working on mixed combustion techniques applicable to coal and LNG power plants for the purpose of hydrogen- and ammonia-based power generation.

The ministry also said that state-run and private-sector power companies’ joint projects will start next month for the same purpose. “Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction and Hyundai Heavy Industries Power Systems will work on facilities for mixed combustion using ammonia and Lotte Fine Chemical will be in charge of large-scale ammonia fuel supply,” it explained, adding, “Korea Southern Power will develop and apply ammonia-based mixed combustion using coal power plants and commercialize mixed combustion with an ammonia ratio of at least 20 percent starting from 2024.”

In addition, Korea Western Power and Hanwha Impact will complete their research on mixed combustion and power generation with a hydrogen ratio of at least 50 percent by 2022 and demonstrate mixed combustion with a hydrogen ratio of at least 70 percent in 2025.
