Samsung Electronics May Purchase OLED Panels from LG Display

Samsung Electronics may acquire OLED TV panels from LG Display.

Despite the news reports about Samsung Display's mass production of QD OLED panels, LG Display's stock price has not dropped. LG Display closed at 22,250 won on Nov. 24, up 1.14 percent.

Samsung Display is planning to mass-produce QD OLED panels beginning from Nov. 30. They will be Samsung's first OLED panels for TVs. Using these panels, Samsung Electronics is expected to launch its first OLED TVs in the first half of next year.

Analysts say that if Samsung Electronics releases OLED TVs, it can serve as an opportunity for LG Display. “LG Display's ability to supply OLED TV panels is 10 times that of Samsung Display,” said Kim Dong-won, a researcher at KB Securities. “There is a possibility that Samsung Electronics will purchase OLED TV panels from LG Display down the road.”

Some analysts predict a shortage of large OLED panels in 2022. “In light of the growing popularity of OLED TVs and the possibility of Samsung Electronics becoming a new client, we expect a shortage of large OLED panel supply from LG Display,” said Kim So-won, a researcher at Kiwoom Securities.
