To Release UAM Model in 2028

Hyundai Motor Group chairman Chung Eui-sun (left) explains his future mobility business plan at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2020 in Las Vegas in early 2021.

Hyundai Motor Group’s urban air mobility affiliate in the United States has been dubbed Supernal.

The group set up the affiliate last year and has since been conducting research and development on electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicles. Supernal means "best quality" and "heavenly." It symbolizes the Korean automotive group’s intention to bring about changes in society through advanced air mobility (AAM) and provide new experiences to customers.

Supernal is headquartered in Washington, D.C. of the United States. The company plans to expand its business areas by setting up research facilities in California in 2022.

In particular, Supernal plans to go beyond developing flying vehicles to integrating AAM into existing transportation networks through ride-sharing platforms. It plans to release a fully electric UAM model optimized for urban operation by 2028. Supernal will introduce a regional aviation mobility (RAM) machine that connects adjacent cities in the 2030s.

Since 2020, Supernal has partnered with Los Angeles and the Urban Movement Lab to develop AAM public participation roadmaps and policies. It is also participating in a project to build a UAM-only airport with Urban-Air Port in West Midland of the United Kingdom.
