Market Focus Shifting to Vehicle-use Sensors

Samsung Electronics is converting part of its DRAM production lines into image sensor production lines.

Samsung Electronics is turning part of its DRAM production lines into image sensor production lines in order to be prepared for a decline in DRAM price. The switch is occurring in the company's plant in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province.

These days, the focus of the image sensor market is shifting from those for use in smartphones to vehicles. According to market research firms, the global CMOS image sensor market is expected to grow from 22 trillion won to 29 trillion won from 2020 to 2024.

Sony and Samsung Electronics are currently the two biggest companies in the image sensor market. Samsung Electronics’ CMOS image sensor production capacity was 100,000 units a month as of the end of last year, when Sony’s and Samsung Electronics’ shares in the market were 47.7 percent and 19.6 percent, respectively.

“With oversupply predicted in the global DRAM market, Samsung Electronics is planning to reduce its DRAM inventory,” Yuanta Securities explained, adding, “The inventory is likely to run out in the second quarter of next year and memory chip prices are expected to rise again in the second half of next year.”
