BOE Initiates Shipment of 6.1-inch OLED Panels for iPhone 13

Chinese display manufacturer BOE is expanding its presence in the OLED as well as LCD market.

Chinese display manufacturer BOE is expanding its partnership with Apple to increase its presence in the OLED as well as LCD market.

BOE initiated the shipment of 6.1-inch OLED panels for use in the iPhone 13 last month. The shipments are expected to be increased after some testing at Apple. Previously, BOE’s OLED panel supply to Apple was limited to refurbished phones. However, up to 40 percent of Apple products are estimated to come with BOE OLED panels and Samsung Electronics’ proportion is likely to fall over time when it comes to the 6.1-inch OLED panel for use in the iPhone 13.

Chinese LCD manufacturers caught up with South Korean LCD manufacturers in as early as 2017 and the same is likely to occur soon in the OLED market. This is being led by BOE, which has received government subsidies of more than two trillion won since 2010.

According to market research firm DSCC, LG Display and Samsung Display are currently the top two in the global OLED market, but they are growing more slowly than Chinese manufacturers. “Samsung Display and LG Display are expected to show an average annual growth of 12 percent and 19 percent in 2020 to 2025, respectively,” it said, adding, “Meanwhile, the respective estimates for BOE and CSOT are as high as 25 percent and 52 percent.”
