Widening Gap with Toyota

Hyundai Motor's hydrogen fuel cell car Nexo

Sales of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles worldwide in the first eight months of 2021 nearly doubled from the same period of 2020. Hyundai Motor topped the list with a market share of more than 50 percent.

The total number of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles sold in the world between January and August 2021 rose by 91.7 percent on year to 11,200 units, said SNE Research, an energy market research firm, on Oct. 6.

Of the total, the 2021 edition of Hyundai Motor's Nexo accounted for 52.2 percent, followed by Toyota's second-generation new Mirai with 39.2 percent. The two models drove market growth.

Sales of Toyota's new Mirai has surged but remained at second place. It lost the top spot to Hyundai Motor's Nexo in April.

On the other hand, Honda's market share continued to fall, with sales rebounding only slightly. Honda's market position weakened amid a solid two-way race between Hyundai Motor and Toyota.
