The introduction of a secret chat mode to KakaoTalk is drawing a lot of attention.

Daum Kakao announced on Dec. 8 that it has added Secret Chat mode and Decline Invites features to better protect the privacy of KakaoTalk users.

End-to-end encryption technology is used in Secret Chat mode, which stores keys that can only decode messages in a user's mobile device, rather than on a server. Therefore, it is possible to better protect user information. Encryption keys, which can decode encrypted conversations, are only stored on mobile devices, which makes it impossible to access conversations in the server.

A function that allows a user to refuse a re-invitation after leaving a certain group chat room has also been added. It can be activated by selecting Decline Invites and Leave in the settings menu. Since users can permanently leave any unwanted chat room, they can decide whether to participate in a specific chat room.

A spokesperson for Daum Kakao said, “With a recent upsurge of interest in digital privacy, the new update focuses on the introduction of Secret Chat mode and Decline Invites features.”
