The avionics software development capabilities of Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) are now acknowledged to be at the level of Lockheed Martin or Boeing. The increased weight of avionics software resulting from advances in aircraft-making technology and its direct influence on aircraft prices are considered to have laid the groundwork for KAI's performance improvement in the future.

“After being appraised by Capability Maturity Model Integration, we acquired level 5, which is the highest level, since we met 433 certification requirements in 22 areas,” remarked a representative of the KAI on Dec. 1.

Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) is a global industry standard related to software quality developed by Carnegie Mellon University's Software Engineering Institute at the request of the U.S. Department of Defense. It conducts a comprehensive evaluation from development capabilities such as the development, management, and maintenance of a system to business management and support.

Among 9,580 applicants around the world, only 600 companies (6.5 percent) get certified with CMM Level 5, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and BAE among them.

A KAI representative said, “We are internationally acknowledged to have world-class capabilities in avionics software development and management,” adding, “We hope that foreign customers will trust Korean avionics software more.”
