SK Telecom Tops in 5G Download Speed

The quality and coverage of 5G services are continuing to improve in South Korea.

The Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Information Society Agency announced on Aug. 31 that the quality and coverage of 5G communications services are continuing to improve in South Korea.

According to their recent survey for the first half of this year, the average 5G download and upload speeds provided by SK Telecom, KT and LG U+ are 808.45 Mbps and 83.93 Mbps, up 117.98 Mbps and 20.61 Mbps from a year ago, respectively. In that period, the three companies provided a 5G download speed of 923.20 Mbps (up 127.63 Mbps), 782.21 Mbps (up 114.73 Mbps) and 719.94 Mbps (up 111.45 Mbps), respectively.

When it comes to switching from 5G to LTE, which indicates the stability of 5G networks, the average of the three companies improved from 5.49 percent to 1.22 percent in terms of downloading and from 5.29 percent to 1.25 percent in terms of uploading. Their respective figures are 1.17 percent, 1.26 percent and 1.22 percent in terms of downloading.

In the first half, the 5G coverage of LG U+ was 6,805.25 square kilometers and those of KT and SK Telecom were 6,333.33 and 5,674.79, respectively. The coverage measurement was carried out in May this year. In August, the respective figures were 12,598.99, 11,928.10 and 12,772.20.
