Outclassing Tesla and Benz

Genesis' first electric vehicle model, the G80

Genesis' first electric vehicle (EV) G80 has sold more than 2,000 units, emerging as the best-selling model in the domestic luxury EV market, which has been dominated by imported brands.

The electrified G80 model was released on July 7 and exceeded 2,000 units in orders in three weeks.

The G80 EV model is Genesis' first high-end EV sedan, a derivative of the G80 internal combustion engine model. It can run up to 427 kilometers per charge with a high-voltage battery of 87.2kWh. It can charge up to 80 percent of its battery capacity within 22 minutes when charged with a 350kW super-fast charger. A combined maximum output of 272 kW (approx. 370PS) and a combined maximum torque of 700 Nm (71.4 kgf•m) enables the G80 EV model to reach 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds from a standstill.

Another advantage is that buyers of this model can receive subsidies for purchasing electric vehicles because the official retail price is 82.81 million won, below the 90 million won upper limit for subsidies. Most imported electric vehicles are not eligible for government subsidies because their sales prices exceed 90 million won.

The model recorded cumulative orders of more than 2,000 units and immediately became the best-selling model in the luxury electric vehicle market. Tesla's luxury EV models -- Model S and Model X -- sold only 18 and 20 units, respectively, in the first half of 2021. During the same period, Mercedes-Benz luxury EV model EQC400 sold 337 units, the Porsche Taycan Khan 912 units, the Audi e-Tron 126 units and the Jaguar I-Pace 22 units.
