Market research firm TrendForce announced on Aug. 5 that the global annual sales of chips for use in micro LED TVs would increase 250 percent from 2021 to 2025.

“This market will grow at a very rapid pace in spite of the high costs and technical barriers in it,” it said, adding, “The 2025 market size will be 150 times this year’s if the costs and barriers are tackled well.” According to the firm, the size of the market is expected to increase from US$23 million to US$3.439 billion from this year to 2025.

“Micro LED enables wide modular display, cinema display, high-end TV display, and the like and this is why it is promising,” it explained, continuing, “These days, Samsung Electronics in particular is continuing to improve its mass transfer technology, the most tricky part of micro LED manufacturing.”

The firm also pointed out that there are some hurdles ahead of further commercialization and those include backplane- and driver-related difficulties, mass transfer yield and required time as well as costs.
