Market research firm SNE Research reported on Aug. 2 that Hyundai Motor and Toyota sold 4,700 and 3,700 hydrogen electric vehicles in the first half of this year, respectively.

Last year, Hyundai Motor sold the largest number of hydrogen electric vehicles in the world. In the first quarter of this year, however, Toyota beat it by a margin of 200 by selling 2,000. Hyundai Motor regained the top spot at the end of June.

In the first half, a total of more than 9,000 hydrogen electric vehicles were sold worldwide to show a year-on-year increase of more than 220 percent. In that period, the market shares of Hyundai, Toyota and Honda were 51.7 percent, 40.9 percent and 1.6 percent, respectively. Hyundai’s market share amounted to 70.7 percent last year and Toyota increased its market share in the first half.

Hyundai developed the world’s first commercial hydrogen electric vehicle in 2013. Its second-generation hydrogen electric vehicle Nexo debuted in 2018. It has a driving range of 609 km and can be fully charged in just five minutes. It emits nothing but water without emitting any pollutants.
