Samsung SDI and SK Innovation Ranked 5th and 6th

LG Energy Solution regained its top spot in electric vehicle battery usage in May.

Market research firm SNE Research reported on July 19 that the total energy amount of the batteries of electric vehicles registered worldwide in May this year is 19.7 GWh, the amount increased by more than 3.3-fold in one year, and the data includes PHEVs and HEVs and does not include electric buses and trucks.

On the battery usage list, LG Energy Solution rose to the top by beating CATL and Samsung SDI and SK Innovation came in fifth and sixth, respectively. Most Chinese companies, including CATL and BYD, increased their market shares based on a rapid growth of the Chinese electric vehicle market. On the other hand, the shares of Japanese companies such as Panasonic fell.

The figure of LG Energy Solution jumped 3.7-fold to 5.7 GWh and the company regained its top spot in one month. In April this year, the usage of CATL batteries was 6.2 GWh (35.2 percent in market share) and that of LG Energy Solution batteries was 4.2 GWh (23.9 percent). The usage of Samsung SDI batteries increased more than 2.6-fold to 1 GWh, but its ranking fell from fourth to fifth year on year.

For the first five months of this year, the global electric vehicle battery usage increased about 2.7-fold year on year to 81.6 GWh. CATL topped the list in that period, LG Energy Solution came in second by a margin of 0.4 GWh , and Samsung SDI and SK Innovation came in fifth and sixth, respectively.
