Expanding Customer Base for Automotive Chips

Samsung Electronics' automotive semiconductor Exynos Auto 8890

Samsung Electronics will supply automotive semiconductors to Volkswagen, the world's largest carmaker, following Audi.

Samsung Electronics' System LSI Business Department has been supplying the Exynos Auto, its latest system semiconductor product, to Volkswagen models since early 2021. The Exynos Auto is Samsung Electronics' own system on chip (SoC) component for vehicles. It plays the role of a brain in infotainment systems for vehicles.

The Exynos Auto was Samsung Electronics’ automotive semiconductor brand. The Exynos Auto chips supplied to Audi perform various functions including controlling vehicle status, navigation, and multimedia playback. Currently, all of Audi's latest cars are loaded with Samsung Electronics' Exynos Auto chips.

Samsung Electronics is planning to increase the number of semiconductor products for vehicles by using the Exynos Auto as a stepping stone. Although the profitability of automotive semiconductors is still low, they are attracting attention as next-generation parts as electric vehicles (EVs) and self-driving cars become popular.

Samsung Electronics is currently supplying memory semiconductors for vehicles and is expanding its product line to image sensors, SoCs for infotainment systems and LED semiconductors.
