Growth of OLED Panel Market Accelerating

Samsung Galaxy Book Pro 360 released this year

The growth of the OLED panel market is accelerating as the panels are used in an increasing number of laptops and tablet PCs as well as smartphones and smart watches.

According to market research firm Omdia, this year’s global laptop shipments are estimated at 258.4 million units, up 17 percent from a year earlier. In 2019, the shipments were 171.5 million units. The figure jumped 29 percent last year and is continuing to increase this year.

With the demand for high-spec laptops surging, manufacturers are employing OLED instead of LCD panels in their laptops. According to the firm, the size of the OLED laptop market is expected to grow from 150,000 units to 1.48 million units from 2019 to this year and reach 2.57 million units in 2022. Although the current market share of such products is less than 1 percent, the share is expected to soar this year and next year.

Samsung Electronics released Galaxy Book Pro Series laptops equipped with OLED panels in May this year. Xiaomi Mi Laptop Pro 15 made its debut earlier and Asus ZenBook Pro Duo 15 and ZenBook 13 also come with OLED panels.

The same trend is being witnessed in the tablet PC market. Apple is expected to release OLED iPads next year. Samsung Electronics has used the panels in its Galaxy Tab S since 2014. Galaxy Tab S7+ debuted with an OLED panel last year.

Under the circumstances, Samsung Display is increasing its production of OLED panels for use in monitors and laptops as well as smartphones. The company’s OLED panel sales volume is expected to quintuple this year.
