5G Use in Korea Forecast to Reach 67% in 2025

5G adoption in Asian countries

Moody’s said in its report on June 24 that the use of 5G in South Korea is expected to increase from 8 percent in 2019 to 67 percent in 2025 and its use of the technology is likely to reach the highest level in Asia in 2025.

According to Moody’s, the number of 5G service users in South Korea was 15.1 million at the end of April this year, 27 percent of local mobile communication service subscribers, and the number and the ratio are estimated to reach 20 million and 36 percent at the end of this year, respectively.

At present, it is China where 5G services are most frequently used in the Asia-Pacific region. Although the Chinese government has accelerated the adoption of the technology by providing substantial discounts, South Korea is likely to catch up with it in 2025. According to the report, the ratio of 5G service users in China was 26 percent at the end of April.

In the report, South Korea, China, Australia and Japan are classified as 5G leaders in the Asia-Pacific market. “In the four countries, consumers’ reliance on tech firms and Internet services is likely to increase with the popularization of 5G,” it said, adding, “On the other hand, India, Indonesia and Bangladesh are predicted to focus on 4G expansion rather than 5G investment.”
