South Korea Selected as ITU Member Nation 7 Times in a Row

South Korea has been selected as an International Telecommunications Union (ITU) member nation seven times now.

In the election of voting member nations, which took place during the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Busan on Oct. 27, South Korea has obtained the second-largest number of votes following China, and occupied one of the 13 seats assigned to the Asia region. The term of membership lasts for four years from January 2015 to January 2018.

South Korea, which joined ITU in 1952 during the Korean War, has earned the prestige of being elected as a member nation seven times in a row since attending the board of directors for the first time in 1989.

The board of directors, which is composed of 48 member states, takes part in overall management of the ITU, dealing with issues such as monitoring management activities led by the secretary-general and deputy secretary-general, budget approval, settlement of accounts, and so on.

An official at the Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning said, “The election result proves once again South Korea as a global ICT power nation following that of KAIST Institute of IT Convergence researcher Lee Jae-Sub being elected as the director of telecommunication standardization bureau.”
