A KIPO Survey Shows

Images of an OLED brand that Samsung Display has recently registered in 43 countries

South Korea ranks first in the world in patent applications for OLED display panel compensation and correction technologies, a survey by the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) showed on June 13.

KIPO surveyed the five advanced patent countries -- Korea, the United States, China, Europe and Japan – for the 2011-2020 period. Korea came in first with 5,384 patent applications (43%), followed by China with 3,273 applications (26 percent), Japan with 2,433 applications (20 percent) and the United States with 567 applications (5 percent).

Samsung Electronics logged 2,786 applications and LG Electronics 2,412 applications, placing first and second. South Korean companies led global OLED display patent applications.

Chinese display panel maker BOE (1,676) claimed third place, while Japanese research and development company SEL (907) came in fourth.

Korea also came in first in terms of the patents registered with the patent offices of the five countries (4,044), followed by Japan (3,533), China (20,61) and the United States (628).
