The spread of COVID-19 forced Hyundai Motor to stop its plant in Chennai, India for five days from May 25 (local time), Reuters reported.

The decision was made after several workers staged a sit-in protest on May 24 amid the continued spread of COVID-19 in India.

"The COVID-19 situation in India has become far from good, causing an extension of lockdowns," a Hyundai Motor official said. "So we have decided to suspend operations in India temporarily."

As a result, Hyundai Motor's Chennai plant will be shut down for the second time after stopping operations for five days from May 10 to 15.
