Plans to Start Mass Production in 2027

Samsung SDI plans to initiate mass production of all-solid-state battery cells in 2027.

Samsung SDI announced on May 25 that it would develop large all-solid-state battery cells and prototype all-solid-state battery cells by 2025 and initiate mass production in 2027. It also said that it is second only to Toyota when it comes to the number of international patents related to all-solid-state battery technology.

According to Samsung SDI, Japan currently accounts for 68 percent of such international patents, followed by the United States (16 percent) and South Korea (12 percent). “All-solid-state batteries are capable of overcoming the limitations of lithium-ion batteries in terms of stability and energy density,” the company explained.

It has developed all-solid-state batteries since 2008 in collaboration with Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, Samsung R&D Institute Japan, etc. Specifically, Samsung SDI has worked on facilities and production processes and the institutes have been in charge of design, active material research, etc. In March last year, Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology developed an original technique with which the service life and safety of an all-solid-state battery can be enhanced and its size can be halved at the same time, which has been published in the Nature Energy Journal.
