LG Innotek Solds Patents to Irish Patent Troll

Samsung Electronics has recently been sued by a patent troll that acquired smartphone wireless charging technology from LG Electronics.

Samsung Electronics has recently been embroiled in a patent infringement lawsuit in the United States for smartphone wireless charging technology. The patents were originally owned by LG Electronics, which recently announced an exit from the smartphone business. The patents were reportedly handed over to a European patent troll early 2021.

Samsung Electronics and Samsung Electronics' American subsidiary were sued by Scramoge based in Dublin, Ireland, on April 30.

Scramoge belongs to Atlantic IP, an Irish patent management company which also controls Neodron, Solas OLED, and Sonrai Memory, which filed several lawsuits against Samsung Electronics.

The patent troll filed a suit against Samsung Electronics with the Western District Court in Texas, claiming that the Korean tech company infringed on three of its technology patents. It claimed that Samsung Electronics caused damage by manufacturing and distributing products that directly infringed its patents in the United States.

Scramoge says that Samsung Electronics used its patents in 28 smartphone models including the Galaxy S6 Edge released in 2015 and the Galaxy S21 launched in early 2021. It added that Samsung's foldable smartphones -- the Galaxy Z Fold and the Z Fold 25G -- also violated its patents.

Scramoge purchased three patents related to wireless charging from LG Innotek in 2021. LG Innotek officially registered the patents with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Jan. 24, 2017. The company sold the patents to Scramoge in mid-February of this year.

In addition, LG Innotek sold more than 120 patents registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to Scramoge. LG Electronics is LG Innotec's largest shareholder with a 40.79 percent stake.
