Sales Decrease 35.7% YoY

The New Rexton Sports Khan from SsangYong Motor

SsangYong Motor Co. announced on May 3 that the company sold a total of 4,381 units in April 2021 – 3,318 units in domestic sales and 1,063 in exports.

SsangYong’s April sales plunged 35.7% from a year earlier as the production line has halted for 12 days due to a shortage of semiconductor chips and supply issue of auto parts under the company's corporate rehabilitation.

The company was supposed to halt its production line for 7 days affected by a shortage of semiconductor chips, but extended the temporary closure for an additional 5 days because of its suppliers' refusal to provide auto parts.

The company was thankfully able to resume its production on April 26 as SsangYong's commercial creditors, consisting of its 350 subcontractors, voted to re-supply the parts. The company is now making utmost efforts to resolve the back orders.

SsangYong initially planned to sell 9,200 vehicles in April (6,000 units at home and 3,200 units abroad) based on the recovery in exports and robust sales of the New Rexton Sports and Rexton Sports Khan.

Particularly, the New Rexton Sports and Rexton Sports Khan received over 1,300 bookings on the launch day and its accumulated bookings in April reached to 5,000 units in the domestic market.

Its sales, however, achieved only 47% of the original goal due to the production suspension, resulting in a decrease of 44.9% over the same month last year in the domestic sales. The company's exports, meanwhile, recovered with an increase of 33.5%.

SsangYong Motor explained, "The recently released New Rexton Sports and Sports Khan have received overwhelming responses from the market, and we see the recovery in the overseas market. We will solve the back orders and expand sales by normally operating production line based on continued cooperation with auto-part suppliers."
