Equipment Replacement Underway

Samsung Electronics' foundry in Austin, Texas

Samsung Electronics' Austin plant is expected to be fully normalized in June at the earliest.

The plant has begun to replace major equipment with the aim of completing the work by May, according to foreign media outlets on April 19. When the replacement is completed, production is expected to return to normal in summer.

The Austin plant started test operations in early March and has been elevating its facility operation rate in earnest since the middle of March.

Nikkei Asia predicted that semiconductor production and delivery at the Austin plant would return to pre-blackout levels in June.

Some experts predict that other semiconductor giants that suffered unexpected problems like Samsung will not be able to recover their normal production levels until this summer.

Germany's Infineon, the number one company in the automotive semiconductor industry, also stopped its Austin plant due to the cold wave. The plant is expected to go into normal operation around June. Renesas of Japan, another automotive semiconductor maker will normally operate its Naka plant in Ibaraki around the end of June.
