US$17 Bil. to Be Invested to Build 2nd Foundry

Samsung Electronics is expected to announce its U.S. investment plan next month. The investment in the United States and Pyeongtaek, South Korea is estimated to exceed 50 trillion won.

The investment for the company’s second foundry in the United States is estimated at US$17 billion. Samsung Electronics has considered building the plant in one of Texas, Arizona and New York. Austin, Texas is currently the most promising candidate.

Its investment in Pyeongtaek is likely to be made official in the second half of this year. The groundwork already started in the second half of 2020, semiconductor manufacturing equipment installation is scheduled for next year, and mass production is expected to start in 2023. The length of the production lines is estimated at 700 meters.

The total area of the facilities is estimated at 700,000 square meters, the largest in the world. A number of EUV lithography apparatuses, priced at 170 billion won to 200 billion won each, will be used there and the investment in the facilities may reach 50 trillion won or less.
