Proposes High-power Wireless Charging Technology

Wireless EV charging technology

The Korean Agency for Technology and Standards held an international standardization conference on April 15 with regard to the high-power wireless charging technology for stopped vehicles proposed by South Korea.

The online conference was attended by more than 30 industry experts in the seven countries including the United States, Germany, Switzerland and Israel as well as the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and Hyundai Motor Group.

At present, the International Electrotechnical Commission is discussing six pre-international standards related to the technology, three proposed by Japan and the rest by South Korea. According to experts, Japan’s proposals are rather limited in use as those are for an output of 11 kW or less, which is close to the output of a wired slow EV charger.

South Korea proposed wireless charging at 50 kW or more in July last year and the IEC adopted it as a new proposal in December last year. Once the technology becomes commercially available, up to 80 percent of an EV battery can be charged in about an hour and even one-minute charging during signal waiting or the like can lead to an increase in driving range of approximately 5 km.

The agency is planning to hold the same conference again in July this year so that South Korea can keep leading related international discussions and studies.
