Samsung Electronics’ Tizen operating system (OS)-based TV, which has been a big secret so far, was introduced in public for the first time in Korea.

Samsung Electronics hosted the Samsung Open Source Conference (SOSCON), the largest open source conference in Korea, at the Grand Intercontinental Hotel located in Samsung-dong, Seoul from Sept. 16 – 17, and exhibited its TV equipped with Tizen OS there. This was the very first release in Korea, even though Samsung Electronics revealed its Tizen OS at the Tizen Developer Conference held in San Francisco in June.

The Tizen TV exhibited at SOSCON was Samsung Electronics’ curved UHD TV prototype with Tizen OS. Menus could be accessed on the TV while watching a program, and applications including taking pictures or listening to music were also available.

Tizen TV is reportedly still under development, but Samsung plans to add a menu bar that enables users to choose the menus they need.

A Samsung Electronics official explained, “Thanks to the light programming overhead, the speed of Tizen TV is faster than existing smart TVs. Tizen TV also provides users with customizable menus.”

The industry expects that Samsung Electronics will officially release the commercial model of Tizen TV at CES, the biggest consumer electronics trade show to be held in Las Vegas in January next year.
