Following LG Display

LG Electronics’ mini-LED TV LG QNED

Following LG Electronics, Samsung Display has failed to register “QNED” as a trademark in the United States.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) reportedly rejected Samsung Display’s application in an initial determination on Feb. 25 (local time). The decision came five months after the trademark application was submitted in September last year.

In January, the USPTO also rejected a similar application from LG Electronics, which was submitted a couple of weeks ahead of Samsung Display’s.

The USPTO said the term QNED cannot be a trademark because it is simply an abbreviation of “quantum nano-emitting diode,” which merely describes the characteristics of the company’s products. QNED is a next-generation technology under development by global display companies.

LG Electronics tried to use QNED as a trademark for its TV monitors and smartphone display panels. The company named its first mini-LED TV launched in 2021 “LG QNED.”

Although both LG and Samsung failed to register the QNED trademark in the United States, this does not mean that the two cannot use the trademark in the future. They have only failed to use the trademark exclusively.

LG Corp., the holding company of LG Group is waiting for the results of reviews of its trademark applications for LG QNED in 11 countries including Europe, Korea, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
