The South Korean government will invest 204.7 billion won this year and next year to localize automotive chips and components.

The South Korean government announced on March 10 that it would invest 204.7 billion won this year and next year so that more automotive chips and components can be domestically developed and produced.

The government is currently assisting in the development of automotive APs, edge computing chips, Level 4 autonomous car parts, safe driving platform technologies, etc. The announcement and assistance are to deal with the ongoing automotive semiconductor shortage in the mid to long term.

In addition, the government will provide assistance so that non-automotive chips can be converted into automotive chips and more development projects can be launched and supported with regard to EV power control semiconductor modules, communication chips for V2X and autonomous driving, AI chips, and so on.

Also, infrastructure establishment will be pursued with regard to chips based on new materials such as silicon and gallium nitride and R&D projects will be launched for the commercialization of next-generation power semiconductors.

A collaborative group of automakers and semiconductor manufacturers, including Hyundai Motor Group and Samsung Electronics, will be organized and regular Tech Day events will be held for more systematic cooperation.
