Mid-sized Sedan Competition

The Hyundai Sonata is increasing its presence in the U.S. auto market, poised to catch up with its Japanese rivals.

According to industry sources, the sales volume of the new Sonata, which made its debut in the market in May this year, reached 68,176 units between May and July. The monthly average is about 22,725, more than twice the average for January (9,815) and February (11,190).

In the meantime, the sales volume gap between Sonata and the Nissan Altima was narrowed from 19,659 to 916 between February and June, although the number reached 4,077 in July. The disparity with the Honda Accord fell from 20,000 or so to 7,134 in June, too.

The Volkswagen Passat, however, is losing ground in the American market. The Sonata surpassed the Passat by a margin of 4,000 to 6,000 units earlier this year, but the number increased to 14,000 to 18,000 for June and July.
