Kakao Investigation
Fair Trade Commission Chairman Roh Dae-rae pointed out that Kakao’s gift voucher business could cause a problem.
“We are currently carrying out an investigation as to the legitimacy of the business,” he said during a press conference on August 28, adding, “It could cause a problem with regard to the Competition Act if Kakao abused its dominant position to impede the business of its competitors already in the market.”
He continued, “Even major corporations like SK Planet become weak in the field of mobile business, and the point is whether to see even predatory competition as competition, improper care of which could result in a collapse of the market.” He hinted at the possibility of some restrictions by saying so.
He also mentioned that the commission would examine any violation of the Fair Trade Act regarding the business consolidation between Kakao and Daum Communications on the condition that a report is received.
