The Samsung Group announced on August 28 that it selected 10 research items for additional support this year in its Future Technology Promotion Project, a project in which the Samsung Group will invest 1.5 trillion won (US$1.4 billion) over the next 10 years.

The research items selected for this year can be categorized into the three technology fields of energy storage, energy harvesting, and Internet of Things (IoT) security. Dubbed Designation Themes by Samsung, the fields can be defined as those to which additional support is provided separately from the three basic fields of basic science, materials technology, and information and communications technology (ICT).

Three items were selected in the energy storage field, including the design of a new positive electrode material to overcome the capacity limit of existing lithium ion batteries. The three research projects in the energy harvesting field include the development of an artificial lightning generator. Vehicle security to counter the hacking of smart cars is an example of the four projects in the IoT security field.

The Samsung Group announced last year that it would establish the Future Technology Promotion Foundation. A total of 500 billion won (US$492 million) will be invested by the foundation for 10 years to come to support basic science. Also, it is planning to raise a one trillion won (US$985 million) Future Technology Promotion Fund for investment in material technology and ICT.
