A Double Whammy

Samsung Electronics' plant in Austin of Texas

Samsung Electronics' semiconductor plant in Austin, Texas of the U.S. is suffering from a water shortage after a power outage.

The supply of electric power in Austin is improving, but the water shortage in the region is likely to be prolonged due to the freezing of local rivers and streams and water supply networks under cold weather conditions, according to media outlets in Texas on Feb. 20.

Semiconductor experts say that even if the power grid is normalized, it will take a considerable period of time to fully recover and restart Samsung Electronics' Austin plant.

A huge amount of water supply is essential for semiconductor factories because vast amounts of super-pure water are used in each manufacturing process.
