Obtains 4 TUV Biodegradability Certifications

Plastic products CJ CheilJedang manufactured with its marine-biodegradable PHA

CJ CheilJedang announced on Feb. 16 that it obtained four TUV certifications with its polyhydroxyl alkanoate (PHA) as a marine-biodegradable plastic material. The four certifications are those in the industrial, home, soil and marine environments. Especially, the marine biodegradability certification is the first in South Korea and one of the very few worldwide.

According to the certifications, CJ’s PHA is obtained through eco-friendly production processes based on microbial fermentation and its biodegradability is at least 90 percent in most environments, including soil and marine. It is the only material biodegradable in the sea and CJ CheilJedang’s PHA production technology is matchless.

The company is rapidly expanding its PHA business by global collaboration. It recently signed a PHA supply contract with Helian Polymers, a Dutch 3D printing material supplier. Its 3D printer filaments are in increasing demand in the fields including aviation, automobile, electronics and medical. Helian Polymers is aiming to overcome the shortcomings of polylactic acid, which is currently in use in 3D printer filaments, by utilizing CJ CheilJedang’s PHA samples of high flexibility and processing convenience. In Pasuruan, Indonesia, CJ CheilJedang is expanding its PHA production lines while accelerating relevant R&D.
