A Contract Valued at 1 Tril. Won

Qualcomm's Snapdragon X-65 modem chip

Samsung Electronics has won an order from Qualcomm to produce its new 5G modem chips.

Qualcomm has decided to outsource production of its next-generation modem chip Snapdragon X65 and its sub-model X62 to the Foundry Department of Samsung Electronics, foreign media outlets and industry sources said on Feb. 15.

The production volume is known to be worth about one trillion won. Thus, Samsung Electronics will produce Qualcomm’s core chips once again after winning an order for the Snapdragon 888, an application processor for 5G smartphones, in 2020.

The Snapdragon X65 is the first 5G chip that will be produced through a 4-nm micro-process. It offers a 10Gbps data transfer speed, 100 times faster than an LTE modem chip.

Samsung Electronics is planning to start producing 4-nm chips as early as the second half of 2021. Only Samsung Electronics and Taiwan's TSMC have announced plans to mass-produce 4-nm chips in the semiconductor industry.
