SK C&C (CEO Jung Chul-kil) announced on August 20 that it signed an MOU for big data business cooperation with Hortonworks.

Established by the Yahoo! Hadoop team in 2011, the American company is one of the three major ones in the field of Hadoop with Cloudera and MapR. Its business scope includes the development and distribution of commercial Hadoop platforms, tech assistance, consulting, and Hadoop training.

SK C&C developed its own cloud-based big data analysis platform and has applied it to SK Telecom, SK Planet, SK Broadband and other peer subsidiaries since 2009. It also launched the Big Data Task Force early last year to find new business opportunities reflecting industry-specific characteristics.

SK C&C is planning to make use of the MOU to set up technical cooperation and support systems in the Hadoop and big data fields while working on various types of big data services customized for diverse industries.
