LG Electronics announced on Jan. 27 that it is working with Qualcomm to develop a connected car platform based on 5G mobile communications.

LG Electronics and Qualcomm are developing a 5G platform that connects cars and nearby base stations. The platform enables navigation, games, real-time broadcasting, and emergency calls through in-vehicle communication in cars. As a 5G platform can deliver ultra-fast and super low latency connections, it can play a key role in promoting self-driving cars.

Previously, LG Electronics decided to establish a joint venture with Magna International, the world's third-largest auto parts company, to produce power trains for electric vehicles. The company has started to develop key components of autonomous vehicles following the development of components for electric vehicles.

Meanwhile, LG Electronics developed telematics (wireless internet for vehicles) technology with Qualcomm in 2004. In 2019, the company signed an MOU with Qualcomm to develop webOS Auto, an infotainment platform for vehicles.
