The Sole Battery Supplier for ZOE since 2013

Kwon Young-soo (right), head of LG Chem's Battery Business Division, and Thierry Bolloré, chief competitive officer of Renault Group, shake hands after signing a memorandum of understanding for electric vehicle development on May 21, 2014.

LG Energy Solution is expected to build a battery manufacturing plant together with Renault, whose ZOE is increasing its popularity in the global electric vehicle market.

From January to November last year, Renault sold 84,128 ZOEs worldwide and the model took the third place behind the Tesla Model 3 (300,488) and the SAIC GM Wuling Hongguang MINI (85,766). In that period, Tesla, Volkswagen Group and Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance sold 405,609, 332,738 and 203,258 electric vehicles, respectively.

LG Energy Solution has been the sole ZOE battery supplier since 2013. “LG will be the partner if Renault builds a battery manufacturing plant with another company,” said an industry source.

If that happens in France, LG Energy Solution can further increase its presence in Europe, which is one of the world’s three largest electric vehicle markets with the United States and China. LG Energy Solution is currently running a battery manufacturing plant with an annual production capacity of 70 GW in Wrocław, Poland. The batteries produced there are supplied to electric vehicle manufacturing plants in Europe.
