When Korean Air Acquires Asiana Airlines

The combined share of Korean Air and Asiana Airlines exceeds 50 percent on 32 of the 323 international routes to and from South Korea.

Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Park Sang-hyuk said that a total of 323 international routes were to and from South Korea in 2019 and those include 32 in which the combined share of Korean Air and Asiana Airlines exceeded 50 percent.

“This means the resultant company’ share will exceed 50 percent in 32 international routes once Korean Air merges itself with Asiana Airlines,” the lawmaker explained, adding, “Especially, the share was 100 percent when it comes to the seven including those from Incheon to LA, New York, Barcelona and Sydney and over 75 percent as for the four including those to Honolulu and Rome.”

Earlier, on Dec. 2 last year, Korean Air president Woo Ki-hong remarked in an online press conference that the merger would not lead to monopoly except a small number of long-haul routes.
