Chinese Makers Strong in Online Channels

Chinese companies are strong in online smartphone market in Southeast Asia.

Market research firm Counterpoint Research reported on Jan. 21 that the ratio of the online segment in the smartphone market of the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia increased 8 percentage points year on year in the third quarter of 2020.

In Indonesia, online smartphone sales accounted for 20 percent of the overall smartphone sales. The market research firm said that the ratio would continue to increase with regard to COVID-19.

In the third quarter of last year, Oppo recorded a share of 20 percent in the four countries’ smartphone market, followed by Samsung Electronics (19 percent).

“Samsung Electronics, Vivo and Oppo had higher market shares in the offline market whereas Xiaomi and Realme did so in the online market,” the firm explained, adding, “Vivo topped the offline markets of Indonesia and the Philippines, Xiaomi did so in the online markets of Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam, and Samsung Electronics did so with a share of about 40 percent in the offline market of Vietnam.”
