Hyperconnect's "Azar" video chat app

Sensor Tower, a market research company, released data on Jan. 9 regarding the European mobile market, and a familiar name stood out among global services. It was “Azar,” a global video messenger provided by a South Korean startup Hyperconnect.

The app was ranked 6th among all non-gaming apps in 2020, after Tinder, Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, and Google One. Azar was also ranked 4th on Google Play Store.

Azar is a video chat app that allows you to chat casually with people of similar interests on the other side of the globe by simply swiping the screen with their fingers in a safe and enjoyable environment. With Azar, people can make friends from all over the world and experience the feeling of going on a trip from the safety and comfort of your own home.

Hyperconnect has been aware of the potential of the video communication field since its foundation in 2014. Azar garnered attention abroad as soon as it was released. Its unique technology showed several success factors, including providing stable, high-quality video services in various communication environments such as countries with poor network environments or low-end mobile phones.

In particular, from its launch, Azar was able to solve the performance and network bandwidth problems that may otherwise have occurred in P2P communication with the company’s own tech, providing group video call technology of up to eight mobile devices that can be connected without server intervention, and two-way real-time broadcasting with high definition and low latency. It is also thanks to this technology that it can reliably provide up to 85 million WebRTC calls per day.

Hyperconnect said, “Azar is provided in 230 countries and 19 languages around the world, and international users account for 99% of its user base. The app is loved by people all over the world. This was made possible by the unique tech that provides people with the joy of 'super connection,’ and, as such, we will continue to focus on the development of 'innovative technology.'”

With Azar, Hyperconnect has focused on AI technology to provide a fun, pleasant and safe experience to users around the world. And as a result, various ai-related papers are showing achievements as well.

Hyperconnect, based in Seoul, South Korea, is globally recognized for its advancements in the world of artificial intelligence, particularly its development of a proprietary on-device AI engine. A next-generation deep learning technology that runs directly on mobile devices, Hyperconnect’s on-device AI drives powerful in-app capabilities without data ever leaving the device, mitigating data leakage and privacy issues while enabling groundbreaking outcomes across video, image, voice, and text. Hyperconnect was the world’s first company to commercialize “WebRTC” technology in a mobile environment, first launching Azar in 2014, “Hakuna Live” in 2019 and social discovery dating app “SLIDE” in 2020.

Hyperconnect’s accolades also include its real-time voice translation technology, ultimately published and adopted in 2019 and 2020 at INTERSPEECH, the International Society for Speech Language Processing. Hyperconnect was the first Korean company to win the CVPR 2018 International Low-Power Image-Type Competition (LPIRC).
