Including AI Semiconductor Technology

Substrates incorporating the Aldebaran processors developed by the ETRI

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) announced on Jan. 11 that its AI chip, digital holographic display and sound field security sensor technologies would be exhibited at CES 2021.

The AI chip technology is a chip development technology optimized for complex arithmetic processing of an AI algorithm. Its arithmetic capacity amounts to 40 teraflops, the finest performance ever, and yet its power consumption stands at 15 watts. Its arithmetic efficiency overwhelms those of existing commercial GPU chips.

As for the digital holographic display technology, a tabletop display and an ultra-high-resolution spatial light modulator panel will be exhibited. The former enables 360-degree holographic color image observation. With the latter, the hologram viewing angle can be widened based on a pixel pitch as small as 1 micrometer. In August last year, the institute won an innovation award from the Society for Information Display with the technology.

The sound field security sensor is to detect an intruder or a fire by using acoustic reflex and diffraction. The sensor is characterized by having no blind spot and being highly accurate. In addition, it can be combined well with AI, the IoT, etc. The sensor has been developed in collaboration with Secuworks, a research institute spin-off company.
